In 2005 some New Denver residents, aware that a Burial Society existed in Winlaw, wondered if the same thing might be done in New Denver. An initial meeting was held in New Denver with Sam Simpson from the Winlaw group, who explained what was required and the legalities involved. Sufficient local interest prompted further meetings in New Denver, with the creation of a Board of Directors who decided how we should organize ourselves, and what the group should be called.
Discussions took place with various branches of government to ensure that our plans fit all legal requirements. Michael Sweeny, lawyer resident in Hills, assisted in this process.
In October 2005, a successful application was made for society status.
Details about what is needed when a family decides on a private funeral were collated in a ‘handout’ which is issued to members and others in BC who request the materials.
The Society has held annual AGMs and board meetings twice a year. Several educational events have taken place.
Since 2005 the Society has obtained a freezer with Techni Ice sheets, and maintains a supply of coffins.
